Interview: Hiroyuki Sanada on Bringing ‘Shōgun’ and Toranaga to Life

This year’s most nominated series at the Emmy Awards is Shōgun, a monumental adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel set in Japan in the 1600s. Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is the revered leader who relies heavily on English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) and interpreter Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai) as he plots the future of his community amid treacherous elements.

Awards Buzz spoke with Sanada about what he put into this show and his first time serving as a producer. Watch the video above to hear how he feels about not being part of most of the action scenes and his wealth of experience working in both Japan and Hollywood.

Hiroyuki Sanada is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at this year’s Emmy Awards. Shōgun is available to stream on Hulu.
