About “Blue Moon”

“Blue Moon,” the latest collaboration between Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater. This film marks another chapter in their successful partnership, following their work on the “Before” trilogy, “Boyhood,” and other projects.

This time, Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater focus on the artistic duo of Rodgers and Hart, specifically towards the end of their professional relationship. “Blue Moon” stars Ethan Hawke as Lorenz Hart, a struggling, alcoholic lyricist, who finds himself estranged from his former collaborator, Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott). The film largely takes place in a bar Hart frequents, where he retreats during the opening night performance of “Oklahoma!” — Rodgers’ first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein II (Simon Delaney). As Rodgers’ career is about to soar, Hart is at a low point, forced to endure celebratory faces at the “Oklahoma!” afterparty, which is held at the same bar. Among the attendees is Elizabeth Weiland (Margaret Qualley), a 20-year-old Yale student by whom Hart is captivated. This has been a passion project for Hawke and Linklater for years, and it’s finally being released. Sony Pictures Classics began a limited release of “Blue Moon” on Friday, October 17, with a wider release across the U.S. starting the following Friday, October 24.

“It’s such a smart question, nobody’s ever asked me that. That was the most difficult and interesting aspect. If you’re trying to make a movie where it’s all in real time at one opening night party in 1943- it’s all about the movement.”
