Interview: Robin Wright and Laurie Davidson on Reconsidering Perspectives and Information Intake in ‘The Girlfriend’

In Prime Video’s The Girlfriend, things don’t go smoothly when Daniel (Laurie Davidson) introduces his mother Laura (Robin Wright) to his girlfriend Cherry (Olivia Cooke). They see events in remarkably different ways, leading to severe conflict and Daniel being pulled in radically different directions by the two women closest to him.

Awards Buzz spoke with Wright and Davidson about whether they’ve started to reconsider if they’re getting the full picture of what’s happening in their own lives. Wright confirmed that it has:

“Completely. This is why I wanted to make this show, because this is human condition. We all do it and we’ve done it to other people, and it’s not criminal. It’s just the individual sees things differently and it can be a minutiae of change between the two perspectives, but they’re massive when you see them in front of each other right. So we were trying to accomplish that as a theme.

Davidson agreed:

“We see this in Laura and Cherry and we also see this in our polarized politics. We have ideas that we can’t meet on a middle ground and everything, all information, confirms our biases. Moreso than ever, you can’t say what the truth is, or it’s so easy to discredit someone’s telling of a story, of a situation. We live in a time now where the truth – where does it lie?”

Wright added:

“We’re all commenting and everybody’s got a platform and everybody’s a judge and everybody’s pointing fingers. You don’t even know if that information that you received is true! So it’s the same thing in this show. You find out later in the season that Laura was right and Cherry was right. They’re both righteous and they’re both valid.”

Watch the full video above to hear how they approach characters in their work and whether that differs based on how long the show might last, as well as if they think that there should be more of this show or if its end is the perfect closing for a haunting and unforgettable story.

The Girlfriend is streaming on Prime Video.
