Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!
Last year’s nominees: Only Carol Burnett (Palm Royale) isn’t eligible since her show hasn’t yet returned for season two. Despite appearing in only three episodes this season, Meryl Streep (Only Murders in the Building) will compete here again due to a recent Emmy rule change. Defending champion Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear) and past winner Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary) are likely to be back, along with Janelle James (Abbott Elementary) and Hannah Einbinder (Hacks).
Returning contenders: Jessica Williams (Shrinking) was nominated for season one of her show when it aired two years ago.
Past nominees: Jane Lynch (Only Murders in the Building) was nominated for the first season of her show and has now been promoted to the supporting race for its fourth season. It was for a different show but the same role – Laurie Metcalf (The Conners), who won three prizes in a row between 1992 and 1994, was nominated again in 1995 and then for the show’s reboot in 2018 – is eligible for her show’s seventh and final season.
The rest: The Critics Choice Association cited Stephanie Koenig (English Teacher) and Patti LuPone (Agatha All Along), who are both possible but not entirely likely. Past Emmy favorites Kathryn Hahn (The Studio) and Catherine O’Hara (The Studio) have the most buzz, and costar Chase Sui Wonders (The Studio) is possible too. Other new contenders include Kerri Kenney-Silver (The Four Seasons), Erika Henningsen (The Four Seasons), Poorna Jagannathan (Deli Boys), Justine Lupe (Nobody Wants This), and the late Linda Lavin (Mid-Century Modern). Both Eva Longoria (Only Murders in the Building) and Molly Shannon (Only Murders in the Building) joined the cast of their show and could get nominated, as well as stars of existing favorites yet to be honored, like Megan Stalter (Hacks), Lisa Ann Walter (Abbott Elementary), Christa Miller (Shrinking), Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking), and Abby Elliott (The Bear).
