Interview: Baltasar Kormákur on the Complicated Challenges of Adapting and Casting Iceland’s Oscar Entry ‘Touch’

In Baltasar Kormákur’s Touch, Kristófer (Egill Ólafsson) has lost his wife and is drawn to his past to find the woman he never forgot: Miko (Yoko Narahashi). Half a century earlier, a young Kristófer (Pálmi Kormákur) leaves Iceland to study in London, where he begins working at a Japanese restaurant and meets the owner’s daughter Miko (Kōki), growing very close to her before surprising revelations lead to a long-term separation.

Awards Buzz spoke with Kormákur about the process of finding the right actors – who spoke the right languages – for each part. Watch the video above to hear how the film has been received worldwide and the excitement of representing Iceland as its official Oscar submission for Best International Feature.

Touch is available to stream on Peacock.
