Interview: ‘Bugonia’ Writer Will Tracy on Crafting a Thriller Packed with Complexity and No Easy Answers

Will Tracy won six Emmys for his work on Last Week Tonight and Succession. He now enters the Oscar race with Bugonia, a thought-provoking thriller that marries conspiracy, politics, and class. Adapted from the 2003 Korean film, Save The Green Planet!, Bugonia stars Emma Stone as a pharmaceutical CEO who is kidnapped by an employee (Jesse Plemons). The acting is top-notch, and Yorgos Lanthimos directs the film with confidence, but it’s Tracy’s script that really shines. Bugonia balances riveting plot turns and intelligent banter, resulting in a film that goes down smooth and packs a punch with a tantalizing ending.

In our AwardsBuzz interview, I press Tracy about some of Bugonia’s thornier thematic elements. He remains unwilling to offer up any clear conclusions, but Will Tracy is still eager to explore (and discuss) how people interact with their ever-changing sociopolitical landscape. And each other. One can only hope for more films like Bugonia. And more writers like Will Tracy, unafraid to challenge us along the way.
