Interview: Carrie Coon on Bertha, ‘The Gilded Age,’ and Building an Iconic Career

Carrie Coon can do just about anything.

Since her breakout on HBO’s The Leftovers, she has become one of the defining performers of the prestige television era, building an enviable résumé that includes FargoThe White Lotus, and now The Gilded Age, where she plays the deliciously ambitious Bertha Russell with equal measures of calculation, vulnerability, and steel. Her film work is no less impressive, spanning everything from David Fincher’s Gone Girl and Steven Spielberg’s The Post to the intimate family drama His Three Daughters. Add two Tony Award nominations—including one this year for Bug—and the result is a career distinguished not just by range, but by an uncanny ability to command any medium she steps into. And she makes it all look effortless. So much so, I think we’ve taken Coon for granted. Although, as you’ll see, she’s far too humble to agree.
