One of the best surprises of the Oscar shortlists was recognition for Gabriel Domingues’ work casting The Secret Agent.
The actors fit together like the pieces of a vibrant, intricate puzzle, transporting us to 1970s Brazil. The brilliance of a film packed with fresh discoveries and inspired choices lies in the seamlessness. But do not underestimate the challenge awaiting Domingues. Director Kleber Mendonça Filho had a very exacting vision for each of his characters, and they have to look and feel like they belong in the ‘70s. Domingues relied on research and instinct to scout actors from across Brazil. As the Academy celebrates the inaugural Best Casting Oscar, it is films like The Secret Agent and talent like Domingues that are most worthy of an embrace.
