In the fifth and final season of Hacks, Marty (Christopher McDonald) is getting married, but things don’t go too well when his new bride gets arrested by the FBI during the wedding, leading him to turn again to the woman he’s always wanted to be with, Deborah (Jean Smart).
Awards Buzz spoke with McDonald about Marty’s character arc and how he may actually have turned into a good guy along the way:
“I think it was all in the writing. The fall of Marty in the fifth season was really tragic and we played with that scene like crazy and had a blast doing it. But you see the guy has a real heart and he has nothing but love and respect for Deborah, so that is what I love to do because we’re old pals and it’s been great doing it, and I’m sure we’re all going to miss this show because it’s been a complete joy. I was bopping in like you do when you’re a guest star, I was doing other projects. I think in season four, I only had maybe one setup with Jean. It’s their story. It’s basically Hannah and Jean doing their thing and I think that’s probably why the ending was what it was, because so many people wrote to me like, man, we wanted you guys to get together! What happened? That kind of thing. To be honest, I didn’t know until I got the words, which was maybe a week before we shot it.”
