In director Sam Yates’ Magpie, Anette (Daisy Ridley) leads a lonely life taking care of her infant at a house far away from others while her writer husband Ben (Shazad Latif) takes their actress daughter Matilda (Hiba Ahmed) to set every day, beginning a relationship with her costar Alicia (Matilda Lutz), justifying it to himself because he believes Anette is sucking the life out of him.
Awards Buzz spoke with Ridley about how she came up with a premise and then turned it over to her husband Tom Bateman to write the script. Watch the video above to hear what she found most relatable about Anette and what she hopes audiences will take from seeing it.
Magpie had its world premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film and TV Festival and opens in theaters on Friday, October 25th.
