Interview: Deirdre O’Connell on Unpacking the Very Complicated Mother-Son Relationship in ‘The Penguin’

In The Penguin, Oz (Colin Farrell) is determined to rule Gotham City’s crime world and has very little loyalty to anyone, choosing his allies carefully. He has great affinity for his mother Francis (Deirdre O’Connell), who is slowly succumbing to illnesses that strip her of her memories but still leave her formidable, sometimes ferocious, demeanor very much intact.

Awards Buzz spoke with O’Connell about the incredible experience of acting opposite Farrell as Oz and how that didn’t really feel like working with him at all. Watch the video above to hear how she feels about Francis as a mother given all that audiences learn about what they both have done.

The Penguin is streaming on Max.
