Evan Schiff worked as an assistant editor on two previous Guillermo del Toro films, and when he heard the Oscar-winning auteur was looking for an editor for his adaptation of Frankenstein, he wanted the lead job. He went the traditional route, asking his team to submit him for consideration. But he also reached out to del Toro personally, expressing his passion for the project. Passion and personal touches are present throughout Frankenstein, each frame stitched together with perhaps even finer consideration than that of Victor Frankenstein when creating his creature. After all, Frankenstein is the movie Guillermo del Toro has been itching to make his entire career. And he has succeeded in creating another artful world that honors Mary Shelley’s novel while also presenting new facets of these iconic characters.
And in his love for his craft, del Toro also found ways to honor his creative team, participating in a post-screening panel at TIFF. and opening up the editing room to any interested cast and crew, in Schiff’s words, “demystifying” the often elusive editing process.
Here, in an interview with Awards Buzz, Frankenstein editor Evan Schiff further pulls back the curtain on creating Guillermo del Toro’s latest cinematic masterpiece.
Frankenstein is streaming on Netflix.
