In the new Hulu series Furious, Alice (Emmy Rossum) is an FBI agent who, while struggling to recover from an abusive relationship with police officer Marshall (Jake Lacy), works in partnership with Danny (Scoot McNairy) and Nora (Quincy Tyler Bernstine) to track Catherine (Lola Petticrew), a serial killer hunting down the people who hurt her.
Awards Buzz spoke with Rossum and Liz Meriwether, the show’s creator, writer, and executive producer, about which of the other’s projects made them confident that working together would be a positive experience. Rossum complimented Meriwether’s past limited series:
“Certainly Dying for Sex. Certainly The Dropout. I’m so interested in Liz’s unflinching look at women and the complicated female characters that she writes and I love a challenge. I knew that she would throw some curve balls my way and she did and they were really fun.”
Meriwether brought up Rossum’s longest-running role on Shameless but also other earlier and later appearances:
“Definitely Phantom of the Opera. The performance that you gave in The Crowded Room was so weird and chilling. I feel like Emmy is an unbelievable talent and the more complicated roles you get to play, the more we get to see that. I’m so excited for everybody to see this show because she’s so good in it and so brave and it’s an incredible performance. Also Shameless, there’s so much emotion but also so much comedy in that. And that’s a really hard tone and I, as somebody who’s always gravitated towards hard to impossible tones, yes, I was like, okay, I can work with this actor because she’s not afraid of f things that don’t really make sense, in scenes where you can go from funny to very sad in a blink. Those are always hard. Those are real moments in life though, right? Absurdity and depth comes out of real life situations, so I think sometimes the funniest things are actually the most fucked up.”
