The Boys is officially over after five seasons, and with Gen V also cancelled after two seasons, the future of this deeply twisted universe lies in the past with the forthcoming Vought Rising, which will follow Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) and Stormfront (Aya Cash) in the 1950s.
Awards Buzz spoke with creator and showrunner Eric Kripke, who was previously interviewed after season four and as season five was starting (with stars Erin Moriarty and Karen Fukuhara), about how he’s feeling about wrapping the show up at this point:
“I think it’s not perfect. I think we intentionally wanted an ending that felt a little messy. Supes are still out there. Vought is still out there. Annie’s throwing up and fighting with her mom. Kimiko, even though she’s in a peaceful place, is there alone. We were trying to sell the idea that things are never going to be perfect, but with a lot of sacrifice and resilience, there can be hope. This is definitely the right place. I think we were right at the hairy edge of starting to get repetitive and I definitely would not have wanted to end it any later.”
He praised his actors’ ability to surprise him:
“They all did. I think Karl’s ability to be heartbreaking at the drop of a hat when the scene calls for it is remarkable. Antony only makes the unexpected choice and Jack finds real grit and Erin finds this pathos. It just goes on and on where all of them find just really interesting facets of their characters that make it all unexpected. I think the show works because of the characters and the characters work because of the actors, so they deserve the lion’s share of the credit, especially with a show like this which is such a satire.”

All five seasons of The Boys are streaming on Prime Video.
