Interview: Ethan Slater, Maddie Phillips, and Sean Patrick Thomas on Closing Out Season 2 of ‘Gen V’

In the second season finale of Gen V (spoiler alert), Thomas Godolkin (Ethan Slater) sets out to cull the weak from the student population of Godolkin University and faces strong-willed opposition from Marie (Jaz Sinclair), Cate (Maddie Phillips), Jordan (London Thor and Derek Luh), Emma (Lizze Broadway), Sam (Asa Germann), and Polarity (Sean Patrick Thomas), who team up to defeat him and save the school.

Awards Buzz spoke with Slater, Phillips, and Thomas ahead of the finale to get their reactions to their character arcs and their hopes and predictions for what might be next.

Slater shared how he originally came to the show and how his top-secret role unfolded:

“I was a fan of The Boys. I had actually just finished watching season one of Gen V and the next day, I got a call about auditioning for season two. I was like, you’ve actually hit me at exactly the right time. I’ve just watched it. I love it. I think it’s such a cool spinoff of a show I already love. It’s such a cool building of the world. I’d watched, I guess it was three seasons at that point of The Boys and one season of Gen V, and I did my tape the next day. It just felt like, I know who this guy is. I get it.”

Phillips expressed what she’d like to see in a theoretical season three for Cate and the rest of the group:

“I would love to see the characters out of their usual environments. I think that’s where very exciting things happen. I was thinking about what season three might look like if we can to do more of this, and I was like, do they go into the workplace? Do we get to see all of these characters have to deal with the big wide world in a totally different way that could be interesting? My brain could never fathom the likes of what Eric Kripke comes up with, so I’m just down for the surprises. I know whatever it is, it’s going to be good.”

Thomas reflected on working with a cast of much younger actors he greatly respects:

“It’s weird to be in that space where I’m not the young guy anymore because I’m very accustomed to being the young guy, and that’s flipped. It’s phenomenal. These kids – I shouldn’t call them kids – these young performers, they’re so serious and so intense. I remember when I was doing movies and I was their age, there’s a lot of stuff going on that interferes with the work, I’ll put it that way. These guys are not like that. They’re dead serious about the work. They’re dead serious about being great, and they’re achieving it.”
