Interview: GG Hawkins on Exploring Relationships and Attracting the Right Audience for ‘I Really Love My Husband’

In GG Hawkins’ I Really Love My Husband, Teresa (Madison Lanesey) and Drew (Travis Quentin Young) are on their honeymoon are on their honeymoon on an island in Panama, but as they spend more time together, Teresa begins to realize that this seemingly perfect romance may not actually be what she wants. Meeting Paz (Arta Gee), their local guide and host, adds a new dimension of attraction that threatens to further confuse and complicate everything.

Awards Buzz spoke to Hawkins about her title and what audience she hoped to attract with it:

“It’s funny. The title, people either immediately get it and laugh, like, ha, yeah, right, or they’re like, ‘oh…’ I’m like, honey, it’s not going to be that type of film, let me just tell you. And it was a bit of a journey. When we were going into production, I had named the film An Island, and, of course, what does that even mean? To me, I was like, Teresa’s an island, we’re on an island, but for an audience, it is actually very confusing. So we pivoted and when we were in post-production, our editor, Christina O’Sullivan, was about to go back to Amsterdam, where she had moved, because she fell in love, and we were all out at karaoke and we were kicking around some ideas. Someone said, I love my husband, and then Madison Lanesey’s boyfriend was like what about, I really love my husband? Then it just stuck from there.”

Hawkins also spoke about working with frequent collaborators Lanesey and Scott Monahan on film’s screenplay and what finding and bringing Gee into the mix added to the experience and to the central couple’s already-strained dynamic in the best possible way.

I Really Love My Husband is now available on digital and VOD.
