Interview: Hagar Ben-Asher on Telling an Incredible and Unique Story with Authenticity in ‘Bad Boy’

The Israeli series Bad Boy made its debut in the Primetime section at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023, and now, more than a year and a half later, the entire first season arrives on Netflix in the United States. Based on Daniel Chen’s real life, it follows the early years of Dean (Guy Manster) as he is incarcerated in his youth and irreversibly transformed by his life behind bars.

Awards Buzz spoke with creator and director Hagar Ben-Asher about collaborating with Chen and with Ron Leshem to turn this series into what it is now. Watch the video above to hear about how the show doesn’t feel distinctly Israeli and should have a universal appeal.

All eight episodes of Bad Boy are now streaming on Netflix.
