If you think visual effects work is a bunch of people sitting behind computers, think again. As Dennis Beradi puts it, he and his team of over 400 artisans implemented techniques used throughout cinema history to create and enrich the luscious worlds of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
Berardi lovingly calls Frankenstein del Toro’s “Magnum Opus,” and it is clear the adaptation is a real marker of pride and celebration for Berardi as well. Berardi is a titan of the VFX industry, and Frankenstein marks the first film from his famed relaunched studio, Mr. X. From custom miniatures, the first-ever on-screen depiction of Frankenstein’s monster, to 1300 meticulously placed VFX shots, Frankenstein is a masterpiece of creativity and imagination.
Here, in an interview with Awards Buzz, Berardi speaks candidly about everything that went into making Frankenstein look and feel so immersive, his thoughts on artificial intelligence (Frankenstein is, of course, AI-free), and the future of VFX in an ever-evolving industry.

Frankenstein is streaming on Netflix.
