Interview: Jon Bokenkamp on Bringing Elements of ‘The Blacklist’ to a Very Different Show, ‘The Last Frontier’

In The Last Frontier, a plane full of prisoners crash-lands in Alaska, and U.S. Marshal Frank Remick (Jason Clarke) has the challenging task of locating all of them before they threaten the members of his community. Aided by Agent Sidney Scofield (Haley Bennett), his most difficult target proves to be Levi Havlock (Dominic Cooper), who seems to have a leg up on his fellow convicts and an unknown endgame in mind.

Awards Buzz spoke with co-creator, writer, and executive producer Jon Bokenkamp about how his latest show relates to his previous one:

“There’s definitely some DNA of The Blacklist in this. I don’t know how I could avoid it. I love that kind of storytelling. I love a procedural, and there is a procedural aspect to this. I think one of the things that was most fun about The Blacklist was the bad guy of the week, and this, similarly, does have some really fun, interesting, weird criminals that we’re after. That said, it’s a departure for sure. The characters, the world we’re living in, the environment, all very different. But yeah, I couldn’t deny that it was potentially a cousin, or some kind of relative, of The Blacklist.”

He detailed the positives and negatives of shooting in such a wintry climate:

“The benefits all show up on screen. The benefits are the look, the feel of the show, the danger. I know people say a lot of times, the location is a character in the show. I really think this is true in this case, it really embodies what the show is. In terms of what was difficult, the production was very difficult for all those reasons. People traipsing around in the snow with sleds tied to their backs with microphones and camera gear. Actors on snowmobiles being buzzed in. It was a cold shoot, let’s put it that way. Luckily, I could go escape and stand near a heater while everyone was out doing their parts.”

New episodes of The Last Frontier premiere weekly on Fridays on Apple TV+ through the season finale on December 5th.
