Interview: Joy Sunday on Getting to Truly Flesh Out a Character That Feels Close to Her in ‘DTF St. Louis’

In HBO’s DTF St. Louis, the close relationship between weatherman Clark (Jason Bateman) and his ASL interpreter, Floyd (David Harbour), is complicated by an affair with Floyd’s wife, Carol (Linda Cardellini), resulting in a death investigated by two law enforcement officials, Donoghue Homer (Richard Jenkins) and Jodie Plumb (Joy Sunday).

Awards Buzz spoke with Sunday about what it feels like to be in contention for a show called DTF St. Louis and the process of her joining the show:

“It’s a dream. I’m just so elated and surprised every day to wake up and find that it’s reality, it’s real. Every day, I just think of how much of an honor and a privilege it was to be a part of that cast and that story and that world and I couldn’t be more proud that I’m in contention for a show called DTF St Louis. I found out about the role maybe two weeks before we started shooting, so it was a very quick turnaround for me. I was the last person cast and everything just came together. I sent in a tape and then I was hired, which seems wild considering, again, the caliber of people that I was working with. But I think it just speaks to Steve Conrad’s clear direction and vision for his story and, amazingly, how I fit into that.”

She has only warm sentiments about this character:

“Very close. I think because it was really the first opportunity that I’ve had to flesh a character out fully and in a way that felt very personal to me, I think, because I had so much of, again, Steve’s trust, I showed up on day one with my idea of what she would be and got to run away with it. She’s also so endeared to me Jodie’s so endeared to me because of the relationship that she has with Homer and thereby Richard. I’m going to say this fifty times. It’s just so cool that I got to be part of it.”

Watch the video above to hear about getting into the show’s tricky timeline and any connections she sees to her other role in an Emmy-worthy show this year, as Bianca on Wednesday.

DTF St. Louis is streaming on HBO Max.
