Interview: Kneecap’s Móglaí Bap & DJ Próvai on Bringing Their Debut Feature Film to the World

Naoise Ó Cairealláin “Móglaí Bap,” Liam Óg Ó Hannaidh “Mo Chara,” and JJ Ó Dochartaigh “Dj Provaí” form Kneecap, the hip-hop group from Belfast. Their debut single “C.E.A.R.T.A.” in 2017, a song about Irish rights, helped propel them onto the world stage.

Their debut feature film, “Kneecap,” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024 and was a hit, winning the coveted Audience Award and securing a deal with Sony Pictures. Co-written by Rich Peppiat, the film portrays the trio’s journey to fame in Ireland, offering a fun and revealing exploration of sex, drugs, politics, music, and, at its core, friendship.

Awards Buzz interviewed Móglaí Bap and Dj Provaí ahead of the film’s theatrical release. The lively conversation shed more light on the hip-hop trio’s rise to fame and their aspirations for global success.

“Kneecap” is in theaters on August 2.
