Five years after it first started, Hacks is signing off, with twelve Emmy Awards, including one each year so far for star Jean Smart, to its name (so far). Among those are two writing prizes for creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs & Jen Statsky, a Best Drama Series win for the team for season three, and an additional directing prize for Aniello for the pilot.
Now that the show is officially done, Awards Buzz had the pleasure of speaking with this terrific trio for what may well be the last time – for this show, at least. They shared their expectations of whether the show would actually last the number of seasons it did:
“We didn’t, in the pitch, say the word five seasons. We described the final episode and what was going to ultimately happen to the characters, but we didn’t even know if we would get a pickup for the show, much less get to do five seasons of it, much less have the response that it’s had. We did not expect it at all. It’s been surprise after surprise, honestly.”
They also addressed whether the show is done for good or if there might be a reboot or revival in the near (or distant) future:
“Because we had planned the ending and we knew where we wanted it to go and, honestly, that was a question throughout, do we do this ending? Will this work? It was a tonal tightrope, but the fact that it seemed to land with audiences and it resonated with people makes us even more want to leave the show as it is and not do anything after it. Because we, like Deborah, were lucky enough to call our own line and have it end on the terms that we had set out to do, and so we want to leave it at that.”
