In HBO’s DTF St. Louis, the close relationship between weatherman Clark (Jason Bateman) and his ASL interpreter, Floyd (David Harbour), is complicated by an affair with Floyd’s wife, Carol (Linda Cardellini), resulting in a death investigated by two law enforcement officials, Donoghue Homer (Richard Jenkins) and Jodie Plumb (Joy Sunday).
Awards Buzz spoke with Jenkins about whether he thinks there’s more to this story and if he’d be interested in coming back for it:
“I always saw this as a standalone piece. I don’t know how they’d bring it back. I don’t know what they would do. It wouldn’t be the same. If Steve did it, yeah, but I don’t know, some other town with some other police department. The murder investigation was a reason and a way to delve into the lives of these people and really what happened and really who they were, and it just unfolded for the detectives at the same time as it did the audience. I think it was really smart, and if people were expecting just a murder mystery, they were not going to get it because that was just a device he used to explore these three people, and at the same time, write two detectives that were fully fleshed human beings, which was great, really great.”
He shared the advice he’d give his younger self based on what he’s been through:
“I’ll tell you something my wife said to me once about appreciating what you have. I think it was The Visitor, and I had to do press, and I was complaining about it. She said to me, if somebody had told you when you were twenty-one years old that this is what you were going to be doing when you were this age, you would have kissed their feet, so stop complaining. And I went, hmm, you got a point You got a point.”
