Interview: Sara Bareilles on Collaborating with the Late Andrea Gibson to Write a Song for ‘Come See Me in the Good Light’

In Ryan White’s Come See Me in the Good Light, Andrea Gibson confronts their cancer diagnosis and impending death with their wife Megan Falley.

Awards Buzz spoke to Sara Bareilles, who is on the Oscar shortlist for her song “Salt Then Sour Then Sweet.” She had only positive things to say about seeing the film with an audience:

“Oh, it’s like, rapturous. It’s incredible. I’ve seen it now a bunch of times, by my own volition where I watch it at home with my husband and then have seen it in a screening room. There is something really cathartic about sharing this film with a group of people. I think there’s something very special about that because of the courage and the bravery of Andrea and Meg and their partnership and how willing they are to be vulnerable. I think that it’s so funny, it’s so surprisingly funny, when you hear ‘What’s this movie about?’ I have friends that have told me that they were afraid to watch it because they just weren’t ready to be sad and I’m like, ‘You wait – you will probably laugh more than you cry, or equal amounts at least.’ I couldn’t get over how funny the film was, and I just, yeah, I’ve loved it.”

On bringing members of her Broadway and music fanbase to discover this film, she shared:

“The response is unanimous. Everyone that I know that has watched this film because of my involvement has reached out and just said how special and unique and life-changing and life-affirming their experience at the film was. It has been nothing short of – I mean, of course! I’m not even a little bit surprised. The reason I’m involved is because I’m so fucking in love with this person. Yeah, of course you loved it! If you’re drawn to the things that I’m drawn to, yes, you’re going to fucking love this movie. It’s unbelievable.”
