In the new Hulu series Furious, Alice (Emmy Rossum) is an FBI agent who, while struggling to recover from an abusive relationship with police officer Marshall (Jake Lacy), works in partnership with Danny (Scoot McNairy) and Nora (Quincy Tyler Bernstine) to track Catherine (Lola Petticrew), a serial killer hunting down the people who hurt her.
Awards Buzz spoke with McNairy, Bernstine, and Lacy about whether they appreciated the challenge of playing characters going through rough patches or yearned for rare moments of victory. McNairy shared:
“I think it’s really interesting to yes, watch them struggle, and then even more interesting of what Liz did with the writing is how you discover why they are struggling and what are the things that they’re up against and what’s the reason behind all of it. For me, the dynamic of all the characters was what was so fascinating.”
Bernstine emphasized how much she loved her character and agreed about her potential to have a future beyond this show:
“She deserves a comedy sitcom spinoff! I feel like Liz needs to get working on that. This character to me, I’m just obsessed with her. I just love her so much. I admire her. I’m inspired by her. She just is larger than life. I was so, from the moment I read the material, I just was like, this is going to be like Christmas every day. And it was. I loved being on set. I missed playing her when I had days off, which is a rare thing. Liz is just a genius and I’m indebted to her for giving me this opportunity and trusting me with this very unique, like no other character that I have ever read or seen portrayed.”
Lacy addressed his run of detestable characters and how Marshall might actually not be just a bad guy:
“Yeah, the last baker’s dozen have been just bad folks, I guess. When I spoke to Liz about this and coming on board, she was like, look, Marshall is a good guy who’s done bad things, or at least that’s his point of view. Something I really appreciated about the writing, certainly for my character, I assume for others as well, is that Marshall’s done these things that I think the audience finds objectionable, but he also finds them upsetting. He’s upset. He has shame and he has guilt and he has remorse and he also justifies his behavior.”
