Following his Oscar nomination for the documentary short Nai Nai & Wài Pó, filmmaker Sean Wang returns to narrative filmmaking with a coming-of-age story heavily inspired by his own upbringing as the child of a Taiwanese immigrant mother. Chris (Izaac Wang), known by his nickname Wang Wang, navigates social awkwardness and trying to fit in with his friends while not fully appreciating everything his hardworking mother Chungsing (Joan Chen) does for him.
Awards Buzz spoke with Sean Wang and Joan Chen about what this film meant to them and their collaborative process. Watch the video above to hear their heartwarming thoughts about star Izaac Wang’s future and the positive reception to the film.
