Review: ‘1992’ is a Thrilling Heist Film That’s All About Family
August 28, 2024Venice Film Festival Review: ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ is an Instant Classic
August 29, 2024Best known as stars of the Fast (2001) franchise, Tyrese Gibson and Scott Eastwood trade in found family for home-grown dysfunction in this taut new thriller by director Ariel Vromen. In the film, Gibson plays Mercer, an ex-con who is trying to build a relationship with his estranged son. Eastwood plays Riggin, a criminal looking for one big score before getting out of the game. Along with his brother and his dad played by the late, great Ray Liotta, he conspires to rob a refinery plant the night of the 1992 LA Uprisings in the wake of the Rodney King verdict.
It just so happens to be the same plant Mercer is employed at, and that he’s bringing his son back to wait out the evening in what they hoped would be safety. Turns out fate had something else in mind.
Eastwood talked about his process for approaching the character and how the story really spoke to him as a story about fathers and sons.
Gibson spoke to very much the same topics and also spoke about his new album coming out Labor Day weekend. Beautiful Pain will explore many of the same themes in the film and he’s extremely excited to share more about the album in the interview. Be sure to check them out above!
1992 opens in theaters on Friday, August 30th.
