June 11, 2024The anthology series Genius began in 2017 with a spotlight on Albert Einstein. Season 2 showcased Pablo Picasso, and season 3 was all about Aretha Franklin. For its fourth season, which aired this past February, the focus is on two historical figures from the same era: Martin Luther King Jr. (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and Malcolm X (Aaron Pierre). Among the terrific supporting cast is Weruche Opia, who played opposite Harrison as MLK’s wife Coretta Scott King.
Awards Buzz spoke with Opia about her research into this real-life woman and her experience as a British-Nigerian person playing her. Watch the video above to hear about the series in general and Opia’s reflections on the show that earned her a BAFTA nomination: I May Destroy You.
Weruche Opia is eligible for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie at this year’s Emmy Awards. Genius: MLK/X is available to stream on Disney+.
