Interview: Jet Wilkinson on Directing Two Female-Led Shows ‘The Testaments’ and ‘Imperfect Women’

Jet Wilkinson and Latasha M. Ford with Awards Buzz had an opportunity to go behind the scenes to discuss ‘The Testaments’ and ‘Imperfect Women.’ Jet’s recent reflections on her career offer a profound look into the evolving landscape of modern television and the intricacies of her directorial process. She spoke candidly about her work on series like The Testaments and Imperfect Women, noting that she felt a special connection to the former due to its powerful social commentary. The transition to streaming has significantly altered her workflow, shifting from traditional network rotations to more demanding two-episode block shoots. Despite these industry shifts, Jet remains focused on the foundational elements of storytelling, such as building rapid trust with actors through deep listening and the careful study of dailies to understand how they inhabit their characters. While she has found success in episodic television, including the intense challenge of shaping new worlds for pilots, she continues to pursue her goal of directing a full-length feature film based on her own writing.

As a female director in 2026, Jet emphasizes the vital importance of her specific point of view in telling diverse stories and inspiring the next generation of filmmakers. She credits pioneers like Lena Waithe and Warren Littlefield for paving the way for her career, acknowledging that her journey is built upon the influence of those who championed inclusivity before her. Her approach to directing remains highly collaborative, often likening the synergy of a production crew to that of a professional sports team. Whether she is collaborating with lead cinematographers to ensure a seamless visual flow mid-season or selecting guest artists for specific episodes, her commitment to a cohesive artistic vision remains her primary focus. Jet’s perspective highlights both the technical hurdles of the current industry and the deeply personal drive required to break through established barriers in film.
