“If you know where your body is at all times, you can make more choices about how to do it. You can really inhabit a character in a different way, and I think dance really helps with that — they feed each other. Being able to tell a story with your movement and it- conveys character with your dancing.”
‘Wicked’ star Ethan Slater and Latasha M. Ford with Awards Buzz had quite the wicked conversation (pun intended) unveiling the various layers of ‘Wicked’.
During our conversation, we delved into the various layers of the film, highlighting the incredible talents of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande and how their versatile skills elevate cinematic musicals. Slater and Latasha also discussed the significant impact of dance and movement on acting, specifically how physical storytelling allows for deeper character portrayal. Ethan shared the unique challenges of wearing the heavy Tin Man costume and how that physical discomfort actually fueled his character development. We explored his meticulous rehearsal process for Boq and his personal journey to landing this dream role — from initial Zoom calls to a life-changing phone call from Los Angeles. This conversation is a testament to perseverance in the film industry. As the interview makes its way towards a close, the chat touched on his approach to role preparation, the experience of his iconic GQ cover, and the emotional journey of navigating intense auditions.
About ‘Wicked: For Good’
The new installment focuses on Elphaba, demonized as The Wicked Witch of the West, living in exile while fighting for the truth. Meanwhile, Glinda, the symbol of Goodness, continues her reign in the Emerald City. The narrative intensifies when the angry citizens of Oz rise up against the Wicked Witch, forcing the two figures to reunite. To ultimately change themselves and all of Oz for good, they must truly see each other and reconcile their differences.
“It felt like a really perfect project. I love film.” It’s a medium that like and wanna do more of. I love acting on film. And then to have the experience of doing a musical and knowing what it means to tell a story in that way.”
