Emmy nominations will be announced on July 17th. Limited series, anthology series, and TV movies are all grouped together for the acting, directing, and writing prizes, and TV movies have infamously been almost entirely absent from those fields for the past few years. Looking to change that this year are Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie and its Emmy-friendly star Tony Shalhoub, the well-received Red, White & Royal Blue, and films like Quiz Lady and The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (Música would be a great choice too).
On the limited/anthology series front, Fargo is set for a comeback with season five after three consecutive top category nominations (and a win for season one) and a lack of any major mentions for season four. There are new iterations of a number of anthology series that were previously nominated, including True Detective: Night Country, American Horror Story: Delicate, Black Mirror, Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, and Genius: MLK/X. Brand-new options include Baby Reindeer, Lessons in Chemistry, Ripley, Under the Bridge, Fellow Travelers, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, and The Sympathizer, among others.
Despite the influx of options, there won’t be nearly as many nominees in these races, with only the supporting acting categories at seven and the directing race at six. All other fields predicted below will have five. While Baby Reindeer is expected to show up in a big way, it can only earn a maximum of four acting nominations, which could spread the love to other programs. Noteworthy categorizations include both Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough competing in the supporting actress race for Under the Bridge and The Fall of the House of Usher offering four leads: Bruce Greenwood, Carla Gugino, Carl Lumbly, and Mark Hamill. While previous shows with stacked ensembles like Mrs. America haven’t ultimately produced as many acting bids as expected, can Feud: Capote vs. the Swans do better? There are plenty of questions that will remain unanswered until nominations are announced.
