In director Sam Yates’ Magpie, Anette (Daisy Ridley) leads a lonely life taking care of her infant at a house far away from others while her writer husband Ben (Shazad Latif) takes their actress daughter Matilda (Hiba Ahmed) to set every day, beginning a relationship with her costar Alicia (Matilda Lutz), justifying it to himself because he believes Anette is sucking the life out of him.
Awards Buzz spoke with Tom Bateman about making the switch from acting to writing and the evolution of the idea. Watch the video above to hear how he worked with his real-life wife, Ridley, to conceive the film and whether he considered casting himself as Ben.
Magpie had its world premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film and TV Festival and opens in theaters on Friday, October 25th.
