Interview: Joshua Oppenheimer on Transitioning to Narrative Features and the Stories We Tell with ‘The End’

Joshua Oppenheimer’s first two films, The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, both about mass killings in Indonesia in the 1960s, earned Oscar nominations for Best Documentary Feature. His first narrative film is an end-of-the-world musical, something that seems like it might inherently be quite different, but which Oppenheimer insists is quite in line thematically with his past work.

Awards Buzz spoke with Oppenheimer about the switch from nonfiction to narrative fiction and what ideas he finds most important and compelling. Watch the video above to hear about his process of finding actors, incorporating musical numbers, and watching the film with a packed audience.

The End opens in theaters on Friday, December 6th.
