Interview: Greg Kwedar on the Transformative Experience of Working with Incarcerated Persons in ‘Sing Sing’

Greg Kwedar’s Sing Sing tells the true story of the Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison, where Divine G (Colman Domingo) has high standards for the plays he and others put on, channeling the experiences they’ve been through into passionate on-stage performances that provide a sense of escape from their everyday surroundings.

Awards Buzz spoke with Kwedar about actually filming in prison facilities and what safeguards Kwedar and the cast took to ensure their mental wellbeing. Watch the video above to hear about the power of seeing incarcerated individuals and “alumni,” as those who have been released call themselves, watch the film and feel it deeply.

Sing Sing is slated to return to theaters on January 17th, 2025.
