In Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5, ABC has a crew in Munich for the 1972 Olympics covering the games. When members of the Israeli team are taken hostage by armed gunmen, they realize that they have an exclusive access point to the unfolding drama, navigating uncharted territory about what they can and can’t show while switching to an entirely different brand of reporting than they had planned.
Awards Buzz spoke with screenwriter Moritz Binder about his own relationship growing up with this history and what he learned through the research process and having so much access to the real Geoffrey Mason, played by John Magaro in the film. Watch the video above to hear about how he wanted to represent Germany and how he feels the film engages with themes of responsible journalism and current events.
September 5 is currently available on VOD.
