Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Television Movie

Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!

Last year’s nominees: Quiz Lady, Unfrosted, and Red, White & Royal Blue were original movies (the last of them has a sequel planned). Scoop was also original and the same events are covered in the limited series A Very Royal Scandal, which is on the ballot this year. Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie was the continuation/conclusion to a long-running comedy series.

Returning contenders: Though it’s not related, the last film presented by Robin Roberts, Mahalia, earned a nomination in this category.

Past nominees: Black Mirror scored three consecutive wins in this race but is now classified as an anthology series.

The field: This has been a standalone category since 2014. Last year, all five nominees received no additional nominations in any other category. Rebel Ridge and Mountainhead are certainly at the head of the pack, but what’s going to join them is more of a mystery. Am I OK? feels like a solid bet thanks to its film festival debut, but it’s less likely that It’s What’s Inside, Another Simple Favor, Nutcrackers, Out of My Mind, O’Dessa, and Summer of 69 will benefit from the same kind of soft in-person launch. Though its predecessors were released theatrically, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy should do well thanks to goodwill for the franchise, and Nonnas may be another sentimental choice. The presence of Unfrosted here last year suggests that something like Jackpot! or You’re Cordially Invited could do well here, and it’s always possible that an action piece like G20, The Gorge, or The Killer could score. It’s also important not to count out Salem’s Lot, the latest Stephen King adaptation, and Star Trek: Section 31, a tepidly-received installment of a beloved franchise.

This year’s predicted nominees: Am I OK?, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, It’s What’s Inside, Mountainhead, Rebel Ridge
