Interview: Brandon Routh, Mena Suvari & Joseph Kahn on Making a Classic, Nostalgic Monster Movie with ‘Ick’

In Joseph Kahn’s Ick, Hank (Brandon Routh) is the star football player at small town Eastbrook’s high school. After suffering an injury, which coincides with the arrival of The Ick, which has literally wrapped its vines all over the town with almost no one noticing, Hank finds himself working as a science teacher decades later, with his onetime girlfriend Staci (Mena Suvari) having moved on to someone else. Hank and his top student, Staci’s daughter Grace (Malina Weissman), seem to be the only ones in Eastbrook aware that The Ick really is a vicious, malevolent force they’ll need to deal with eventually.

Awards Buzz spoke with Routh, Suvari, and Kahn about the appeal of making a monster movie like this that can be entertaining for the whole family without excessive gore. Watch the videos above to hear about Routh and Suvari’s own high school experiences and the appeal of these roles for them.

Ick is showing in theaters nationwide from Fathom Entertainment on July 27th, 28th, and 29th, and is also currently available in select New York and Los Angeles theaters.
