In Oliver Hermanus’ The History of Sound, Lionel (Paul Mescal) meets and is entranced by David (Josh O’Connor), who brings him along on an expedition through Maine where they record locals singing songs so that they can preserve the sounds. Years later, an older Lionel (Chris Cooper) reflects back on his memories of that time.
Awards Buzz spoke with Cooper and Hermanus about their own relationship with music and sound and how that contributed to making this film. Watch the videos above to hear about Cooper wanting to match Mescal’s Kentucky accent and Hermanus’ tendency to spotlight melancholy but very worthwhile stories.
The History of Sound opens in theaters on Friday, September 12th.
