Golden Globe Film Nomination Predictions

Nominations for the 83rd Golden Globes will be announced on Monday, December 8th, and Abe Friedtanzer and Shadan Larki from the Awards Buzz team came together for a conversation to discuss the frontrunners and current predicted nominees in all major categories!

The Golden Globes offer a helpful benchmark for how the rest of the awards season will go even if their membership doesn’t overlap with the group that gives out the Academy Awards. Dividing films and leading performances into drama and comedy/musical gives the chance for more contenders to be honored.

Last year, four of the eventual Oscar nominees for Best Actress were in the Comedy/Musical category at the Globes, and two years ago, two international features benefited from a rule change that allowed them to be nominated for the Best Motion Picture – Drama prize. This year marks a major opportunity for international features, particularly those distributed by NEON, as Sentimental Value, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, No Other Choice, and Sirāt all potentially in contention.

Dominating most precursors – and expected to do so at the Oscars as well – is One Battle After Another, which should soar to an easy victory in the Best Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical race over its likely top competitor, Marty Supreme. The corresponding drama race is more open, with Sinners, Hamnet, and any of the previously mentioned foreign entries duking it out.

This will also be an important bellwether for certain contenders whose prospects are fading, namely Dwayne Johnson (The Smashing Machine) and Jeremy Allen White (Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere), who missed out at the Critics Choice Awards (who announced their nominations after these predictions were recorded) but will benefit from more slots available and a less fiercely competitive drama-only lineup. It’s also a test of just how strong frontrunner One Battle After Another can be, potentially earning a whopping six individual acting nominations.

Watch the video below and leave your thoughts in the comments! We’ll be back after nominations are announced to unpack the results.
