In The Audacity, from creator Jonathan Glatzer, egotistical tech CEO Duncan Park (Billy Magnussen) struggles to maintain control of his company as he finds an unexpected – and unwilling – partner in his therapist Dr. JoAnne Felder (Sarah Goldberg), who has found her own creative ways to get ahead in a cutthroat world where shortcuts are far too often taken and always come with unpredictable consequences.
Awards Buzz spoke with Rob Corddry, Meaghan Rath, and Simon Helberg about finding connections to pieces of their characters and whether that was something they wanted to do. Corrdry shared:
“Yeah, it’s dumb stuff. You have to find places where you’re similar to the character and places where you’re different and see if you can see how you feel about the parts that are different But, boy, I don’t even know, it’s embarrassing. I don’t want to say what I related to, the very first thing I related to. It was my farts.”
Helberg took a more serious approach:
“I think there’s a spectrum that everybody falls on and these characters are just accentuating one part of it, and so I just personally feel like the idea of leaving a legacy is something that I think is really prominent in this show and in the character too and the Silicon Valley people as well, that they really want to leave behind something or save some swath of humanity. I do relate at least to the concept of, oh, I want to make something great that’s going to outlive me. Or at least some comment or some expression of where we’re at, and I think that Martin is just holed up all day long trying to create his masterpiece.”
Rath also dove deep:
“There’s definitely things that I can latch onto and find similarities with. I think what’s so great about what Jonathan’s built in this world is that he has humanized these really ethically questionable people, and so if we can just hold onto those things, the whole show is about finding humanity in these monsters and hopefully we’ve navigated that well.”
