Interview: Isa Briones on Messy Human Beings, Gray Areas, and Getting to Sing (Twice) in Season Two of ‘The Pitt’

In season two of The Pitt, Santos (Isa Briones) is now a resident who’s feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work she has to do, a weight that’s only made worse when new attending Dr. Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi) chastises her for being so behind on her charting. The return of Dr. Langdon (Patrick Ball) from rehab further exacerbates an already stressful day.

Awards Buzz spoke with Briones about embracing the chance to play someone for whom things really aren’t going all that great:

“Yeah, it wouldn’t really be The Pitt if everyone wasn’t miserable. It was still fun, obviously. Her main arc is, is she going to finish her charting? No. But I think really what it lays the groundwork for is just her feeling really overwhelmed and this day being like, wow, can it get even worse? This person who I really was hoping I would never see again who, the last time I saw him, screamed at me telling me I don’t belong here, is back and I feel very unstable. My roommate, who is not my friend, but definitely is my friend and I have a lot of love for, is maybe going to move out. It’s a very destabilizing day.”

She shared her take on the moral complexity of the Santos-Langdon situation:

“I think trying to find right and wrong in that is a very fraught thing and the whole point is that both people are wrong and both people are right. It’s in the gray. He has an addiction. That is something to have empathy for and he is seeking help. That is great. And also, he was stealing drugs from the hospital. That was not ideal. And he also treated her quite poorly on her first day of work and also tried to gaslight her into thinking that she was crazy when she was onto him because he knew she was onto him. And she also is not always the best person to work with, she does undermine people in authority sometimes when in a situation like that, you can’t be doing that. She also was right about the things. All of these things are true! The whole point is that you are not supposed to see right and wrong here. It’s supposed to be like, fuck, these are really messy human beings who are just trying their best and who have a lot of feelings. I think it totally makes sense that Santos is angry. And he deserves a second chance and he’s trying to atone and all those things. It all exists in the same place and that’s what makes it good TV, good drama. It’s real. It’s life”

The first two seasons of The Pitt are streaming on HBO Max.
