Andrew Guest: Pitching Ben Kingsley and Unlocking Trevor’s Character in a Marvel Risk That Paid Off ‘Wonder Man’

The show is so binge-worthy! It’s nearly impossible to walk away from, especially with the way each episode executes such a perfect “hook” to lead into the next.

Latasha M. Ford with Awards Buzz recently went behind the scenes with Andrew Guest, the co-creator, showrunner, and head writer of the Marvel Studios/Disney+ series ‘Wonder Man’.

During this exclusive conversation, Guest provided in-depth insights into the series’ creative evolution. Key highlights from the lively conversation included: Pre-Production & Casting: Guest discussed the timeline for finalizing episode titles and whether specific actors were envisioned during the writing process. Leading Man: He explored what made Yahya Abdul-Mateen II the perfect choice for the role of Simon Williams and addressed the character’s apparent resentment toward his own superpowers. Securing Talent: Guest shared the story behind pitching the series to Ben Kingsley, detailing the “slight intimidation” involved and what ultimately convinced the actor to return as Trevor Slattery. The Hollywood Setting: The conversation also touched on the decision to film in Los Angeles to authentically capture the industry—drawing parallels to the series The Studio—and whether any other locations were considered during early development.

About “Wonderman”

Marvel Television’s Wonder Man, an 8-episode series that premiered on Disney+ on January 27, 2026, has officially been renewed for a second season.

Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams and Sir Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery, the show explores the comedic and grounded realities of an aspiring actor with superpowers navigating Hollywood. The first season featured a star-studded cast including Josh Gad, X Mayo, Byron Bowers, and Abby Elliott, with the production primarily filming in Los Angeles to authentically capture the industry setting.

Co-creator and head writer Andrew Guest, who previously worked on comedies like 30 Rock and Community, developed the series alongside director Destin Daniel Cretton. Guest noted that the show’s tone evolved into a “comedy with heart” through the dynamic rapport between Abdul-Mateen II and Kingsley. While the series is a standalone “no-homework” show, it remains part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing back Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery from Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
