Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!
Last year’s nominees: Dominic West (The Crown) won’t be back since his show is over. Hiroyuki Sanada (Shōgun), Idris Elba (Hijack), and Walton Goggins (Fallout) all have their shows returning at a future date, and Donald Glover (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) may or may not be back with his show when it returns for season two. Only Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) has a chance at repeating this year.
Returning contenders: Two nominees from 2023, Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) and Jeff Bridges (The Old Man), are eligible again, though they might suffer from Pascal’s exit from his show and the cancellation of Bridges’. The winner from 2022, Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), and one of the nominees, Adam Scott (Severance), are also in contention again.
Past nominees: Though it was in a different category – and a full decade ago – Mark Rylance (Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light) was nominated for the first season of his limited series that now returns with a second chapter.
The rest: With only five slots this year, the five eligible past nominees could populate the category with no new blood, but it’s unlikely that Bridges’ defunct show has enough buzz for him to place again, and while Jung-jae could benefit from his show dropping its third and final season at the end of June, that won’t necessarily help him secure a nomination. One spot has to go to Noah Wyle (The Pitt), who earned five consecutive nominations in the supporting category for ER in the 1990s and now leads the year’s breakout drama. Eddie Redmayne (The Day of the Jackal) earned mentions from SAG, the Critics Choice Association, and the Golden Globes earlier this year. Two past winners in this category, Sterling K. Brown (Paradise) and Jon Hamm (Your Friends and Neighbors), may be back if their shows prove popular enough with voters. Diego Luna (Andor) likely came very close to a nomination for the first season of his show and benefits from a late release for its second and final season. While most Marvel fare hasn’t won over Emmy voters, Charlie Cox (Daredevil: Born Again) does have good buzz, and it’s also possible votes could go to Harrison Ford (1923), Matthew Goode (Dept. Q), Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat), Antony Starr (The Boys), and Billy Bob Thornton (Landman).
This year’s predicted nominees: Oldman, Pascal, Redmayne, Scott, Wyle
