Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!
Last year’s nominees: While none are eligible, the list was Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer), Matt Bomer (Fellow Travelers), Jon Hamm (Fargo), Tom Hollander (Feud: Capote vs. the Swans), and Andrew Scott (Ripley).
The field: Looking back to midyear prizes, Colin Farrell (The Penguin) won the Golden Globe, SAG, and Critics Choice Award, beating out Kevin Kline (Disclaimer) for all three. Cooper Koch (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) was also nominated by the Globes, and both he and his onscreen brother Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story) were left off the SAG list in favor of their father Javier Bardem, who will compete in the supporting actor race here. Jake Gyllenhaal (Presumed Innocent) was nominated by the Globes in the drama series category. Gael García Bernal (La Máquina) is another possibility whose costar Diego Luna got a Globes mention. From the second half of the season, Stephen Graham (Adolescence) is an undisputed lock and the likeliest challenger to Farrell for the win. Past Emmy nominee Brian Tyree Henry (Dope Thief) is also very possible. Robert De Niro (Zero Day) was previously nominated in this category back in 2017 for The Wizard of Lies, and Paul Giamatti (Black Mirror) and Chris O’Dowd (Black Mirror) have an uphill battle going for them given that the only star of their anthology series ever to be nominated was Jesse Plemons back in 2018. Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) and Steve Carell (Mountainhead) the odds against him since Daniel Radcliffe was the only star of a TV movie to be mentioned in the past three years.
This year’s predicted nominees: Farrell, Giamatti, Graham, Kline, Koch
