Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!

Last year’s nominees: Winner Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown) and Lesley Manville (The Crown) won’t be back since their show is over. The other five nominees – Christine Baranski (The Gilded Age), Nicole Beharie (The Morning Show), Greta Lee (The Morning Show), Karen Pittman (The Morning Show), and Holland Taylor (The Morning Show) – should be eligible next Emmy season since the latest seasons of their shows missed the cutoff.

Returning contenders: When her show last aired, Patricia Arquette (Severance) was nominated and could be again barring more prominent internal competition. Natasha Rothwell (The White Lotus) was nominated in the corresponding limited series category for her season one role and is now eligible here for season three.

Past nominees: She wasn’t nominated for season two, but Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets) could return this year for her show’s third season. Season five wasn’t kind to them, snubbing them all, but for the final season of their show, it’s possible that Madeline Brewer (The Handmaid’s Tale), Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale), Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale) could all be back.

The rest: For each of its first two seasons, The White Lotus earned five nominations in the supporting actress race. That trend could continue with some combination of Rothwell, Parker Posey (The White Lotus), Carrie Coon (The White Lotus), Aimee Lou Wood (The White Lotus), Leslie Bibb (The White Lotus), or Michelle Monaghan (The White Lotus). It wouldn’t be smart to bet against fifteen-time Emmy nominee and seven-time winner Allison Janney (The Diplomat), who’s already racked up midyear bids from the Golden Globes and SAG. The Critics Choice Association chose Nicole Kidman (Lioness), Skye P. Marshall (Matlock), Anna Sawai (Pachinko), and Fiona Shaw (Bad Sisters). Dichen Lachman (Severance) leads the pack of contenders from returning shows with much more prominent roles likely to garner votes, which also includes Jen Tullock (Severance), Adria Arjona (Andor), Denise Gough (Andor), and Genevieve O’Reilly (Andor). Isabela Merced (The Last of Us) is new to her show and could very easily get nominated here, as could Julianne Nicholson (Paradise), Amanda Peet (Your Friends and Neighbors) and Olivia Munn (Your Friends and Neighbors). One of the most popular new shows also has a handful of possibilities, including Taylor Dearden (The Pitt), Katherine LaNasa (The Pitt), Isa Briones (The Pitt), Fiona Dourif (The Pitt), and Tracy Ifeachor (The Pitt).

This year’s predicted nominees: Coon, Dearden, Janney, Lachman, LaNasa, Posey, Wood
