Emmy nominations will be announced on July 15th. We’re running down the top contenders in a number of categories and offering predictions!
Last year’s nominees: Jonathan Pryce (The Crown) won’t be back since his show is over, and Tadanobu Asano (Shōgun), Takehiro Hira (Shōgun), and Jon Hamm (The Morning Show) won’t return as part of their show’s next seasons. Billy Crudup (The Morning Show) and Mark Duplass (The Morning Show) will be on the ballot next season after their show returns this fall, leaving just Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) eligible this year. Jonathan Pryce (Slow Horses) was also nominated last year in the guest category but is placed here this year because of his more prominent role in season four.
Returning contenders: John Turturro (Severance) and Christopher Walken (Severance) were both nominated for their show’s first season.
Past nominees: For their show’s fourth season, O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale) were nominated alongside Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale), marking his third consecutive bid for the role. All three were snubbed for season five, and the show’s sixth and final season is eligible this year. A decade ago, Damian Lewis (Wolf Hall) was nominated for the first season of his show, which was then considered a miniseries.
The rest: For its first two seasons, The White Lotus earned three and then four nominations in the supporting actor race. That trend is likely to continue, with Walton Goggins (The White Lotus), Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus), and Sam Rockwell (The White Lotus) the show’s best shots, and Patrick Schwarzenegger (The White Lotus) and Sam Nivola (The White Lotus) also possible. The only person nominated in any midyear precursor category eligible here is Liev Schreiber (The Perfect Couple), who actually won the limited series supporting actor prize from the Critics Choice Association. In addition to returning contenders from their shows, Josh Charles (The Handmaid’s Tale), Zach Cherry (Severance), and Tramell Tillman (Severance) will surely earn votes. Lee Byung-hun (Squid Game) wasn’t on the ballot for season one of his show but is now and is probably its best bet, with Choi Seung-hyun (Squid Game) and Park Sung-hoon (Squid Game) also submitted and possible given the show’s two nominations in this category for season one. Popular shows that could have contenders here include Patrick Ball (The Pitt), Gerran Howell (The Pitt), Gabriel Luna (The Last of Us), James Marsden (Paradise), Jason Ritter (Matlock), Matt Smith (House of the Dragon), and Stellan Skarsgård (Andor). Even though his show has been cancelled, John Lithgow (The Old Man) shouldn’t be underestimated since he’s been nominated in the past for eight different projects, including two bids in this category, for Perry Mason and The Crown, within the past decade. If voters are paying attention to their show, Ken Leung (Industry), Sagar Radia (Industry), and Kit Harington (Industry) could show up, and the same is true for Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil: Born Again).
This year’s predicted nominees: Goggins, Isaacs, Lowden, Pryce, Rockwell, Tillman, Turturro
