Interview: Alan Poul on the Cultural Challenges and Rewards of Making ‘Tokyo Vice’

Executive producer Alan Poul has a longstanding relationship with HBO dating back to Six Feet Under, and he later worked on The Newsroom, directing a handful of episodes of both series. His most recent foray into HBO programming, this time for Max, is on the series Tokyo Vice, an ambitious crime drama filmed in Japan.

Awards Buzz spoke with Poul about the careful approach to working within Japanese culture and producing the show. Watch the video above to hear his hopes for the future of the show and his reflections on past series like Swingtown.

Alan Poul is eligible for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series at this year’s Emmy Awards. Seasons one and two of Tokyo Vice are available to stream on Max.
