In Andrew Durham’s Fairyland, Alysia (Emilia Jones) and her father Steve (Scoot McNairy) move to San Francisco in 1973 after Alysia’s mother is killed in a car accident. As Alysia grows up and begins to understand more of how the world works, she also watches her father live as his true self as a gay man. Over the years, their unconventional relationship experiences its ups and downs as the strength of their bond is tested.
Awards Buzz spoke with Durham about his own experience growing up with a gay father in San Francisco and what spoke to him from Alysia Abbott’s book. Watch the video above to hear about his process of finding the right actors and the long journey to bring this film to life and into theaters.
Fairyland opens in select theaters nationwide on Friday, October 10th.
