About “Forever”:
A synopsis of the enduring appeal of Judy Blume’s “Forever,” especially in light of the new Netflix adaptation — two teenagers experiencing intense first love challenged by their families — is a timeless narrative, echoing even Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

Blume’s 1975 novel, “Forever,” offered a uniquely frank and empathetic perspective on this experience for young readers of the time, rooted in its second-wave feminist context.
The recent Netflix series, entitled “Forever,” beautifully demonstrates the book’s lasting relevance. While the show significantly updates the setting to late-2010s Los Angeles and features Black teenagers from diverse backgrounds, creator Mara Brock Akil maintains fidelity to the emotional core of Blume’s work. The series thoughtfully portrays the inner lives of young love while also valuing the perspectives of their parents. This adaptation highlights the universal themes present in Blume’s novel and confirms its continued power to resonate with new generations.
