Interview: Simone Kessell on Playing a Smart, Surprising Character in a Key Relationship in ‘The Last Frontier’

In The Last Frontier, a plane full of prisoners crash-lands in Alaska, and U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke) has the challenging task of locating all of them before they threaten the members of his community. Aided by Agent Sidney Scofield (Haley Bennett), his most difficult target proves to be Levi Havlock (Dominic Cooper), who seems to have a leg up on his fellow convicts and an unknown endgame in mind, which begins with kidnapping Remnick’s wife Sarah (Simone Kessell).

Awards Buzz spoke with Kessell about how Sarah is a very different and much more grounded character than she initially appears:

“So many people who have seen the trailer are like, oh my god, is she dead? And you know the Se7en moment with the cooler, is her head going to be in the cooler? But no, she’s definitely a very strong female character, which is what I was drawn to when I was first read it. She’s got gumption. She’s got this motherly instinct that her son is not okay. She calls it like it is. I think that’s refreshing to see, especially on a show like this. He’s really created a very real character, and also the relationship between Frank and Sarah is kind of a circle and then all of the chaos endures around it.”

She commented on Sarah’s big moment where she identifies an escapee out of place within seconds at the hospital:

“Does it happen too quickly, or did you believe it? When I was doing it, I was like, why am I so whip-smart? And they were like, remember, you saw the folders! When she’s in the car with Frank, going to get to the son, she had all the folders of everyone, all the baddies, right? That’s when she clocks him. That’s the backstory on that.”

New episodes of The Last Frontier premiere weekly on Fridays on Apple TV through the season finale on December 5th.
